Welcome to the recovery update page for Steve Cooke.
3-1-03
What a week this has been for us. Steve and I both feel like we've been riding on train tracks, the road's been so bumpy. Finally, Friday evening we received the news we were hoping for, the Doctors at UCSF "will" be able to use the Gamma Knife procedure on his tumor. They will also do a chemo treatment with two new drugs. We don't have a date yet for the Gamma Knife, hopefully it will be scheduled within the next week or so.
The Gamma Knife is done as an outpatient procedure. There's no surgery involved. It is an intensive radiation done from several different points on the tumor itself, not in a field area like the first radiation treatments. The chemo will be given orally again and we hope to get that started this week, even before the Gamma Knife treatment. So we're back on a solid road to recovery. After the first phase of treatment an MRI will be done to see how Steve is responding to the new chemo regime. If all goes well, Steve can repeat the chemo up to six times to keep the tumor in check. This is great, Steve can carry on normally and not worry about going anywhere because of the chemo treatments. The only thing he has to do every week or so is get a blood test to check his white blood count.
Steve is looking and feeling great. He is still walking in the mornings (approximately 4-5 miles) and listening to his books on tape. He and Jarrett are going to the Racquet Club and working out every day and swimming. Steve's doing so well. He amazes everyone who sees him. That's my guy.
Friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when we have trouble, thanks for all your work through your thoughts, cards, calls and prayers.
